Awareness of sleeping positions and proper pillows can minimize pain
Most everyone knows that good posture is important, but good posture doesn’t apply just to sitting and standing. The muscles and ligaments of your back relax and heal themselves while you sleep. In order to protect your back, good posture is also important while sleeping.
As with so many things, when it comes to neck pain, prevention is better than cure. It’s true that some causes of neck pain, such as age-related diseases or accidents, are not under your control. On the other hand, there are many things you can do to minimize your risk. One place to start is to look at how you sleep and what effect this may have on your neck pain.
Patented design of the enVy® pillow offers optimal head, neck and shoulder support, simultaneously relieving neck, shoulder and head aches and pains caused by poor sleeping alignment.
The two optional neck supports on each V shaped pillow, the central raised pattern and the ergonomic gently raised edges allow for optimal placement of your head and spine with a slight desired traction of the C spine (neck).
This positioning allows you to sleep in proper spinal ergonomics resulting in the promotion of general health and wellbeing.
Spinal Alignment is Essential for Healthy Sleep!
If you are waking up to neck pain, headaches, migraines, shoulder strains and pins and needle/ numbness… and you didn’t go to bed with this pain… then something has gone terribly wrong in the 6 to 8 hours you spent in bed!
For the cervical spine health, your sleeping position and the pillow you use are of significance. During sleep, your spine and muscles should rest.
If your pillow is too high and too stiff, it will keep your neck flexed overnight and can result in morning pain and muscle tension within your neck, arms and shoulders.
Similarly, you are also at risk for painful and strained neck muscles, if your pillow is too low.
The worth position for the spine health is to sleep on your stomach with your neck turned to the side. It leads to a huge overload of muscular system, tension and neck pain. Sleeping position on the stomach should be avoided especially by people with problems related to the neck and lumbar spine.
While sleeping on your back or side without a pillow your cervical spine and muscles does not rest. On the contrary, it remains in tension. The muscle structure, ligament system and intervertebral joints are overloaded. The natural, physiological curve of your neck is not supported, when lying on your back.
During sleep, the cervical spine will tend to straighten up and at this point the muscles and ligaments will stretch.
It is even worse when lying on your side without a pillow, your cervical spine bends to the bed. Sleeping on your side without a support for your head, you cause large compression to the bending side of the neck, on the side you lay on, and on the opposite side to a very large stretch and muscle tension.
What is the best sleeping position for neck pain?
Two sleeping positions are easiest on the neck: on your side or on your back.
Preferred sleeping positions are often set individually early in life and can be tough to change, not to mention that we don’t often wake up in the same position in which we fell asleep.
Still, it’s worth trying to start the night sleeping on your back or side in a well-supported, healthy position. Keep your ears, shoulders, and hips aligned when sleeping as well as when turning.
WHY CHOOSING THE RIGHT PILLOW IS IMPORTANT AND WHAT IS A THERAPEUTIC PILLOW?
Being tired after a long working day we often dream only about our pillows, but simultaneously we forget that it needs to be replaced after some time with a new one. If you wake up with pain and stiffness in your neck, feeling painful tension in the shoulders, numbness and tingling in the hands… this is a signal to look at your bed in daylight and when you are not sleepy.
If your pillow is too high and too firm, it will raise your head and straighten the spine, causing pain and stiffness of your neck. If your pillow is too low and too soft it can similarly lead to muscular tensions within your neck, arms and shoulders.
Ask yourself a question: when did you replace your pillows last time? Do your pillows offer correct neck support and spine alignment? Is your mattress not too soft or not too firm?
The purpose of a pillow is to correctly support your head and neck in a proper alignment and to reduce muscle tensions. The best solution may be just to try a new pillow that keeps your cervical spine in neutral alignment, meaning, the natural curve of your neck is supported and maintained in both sleeping positions: on your back and on your side.
An orthopaedic pillow is a wellness pillow designed to ensure the right placement and support of head and natural curve of neck and to correct spine positioning in bed in order to provide safe and healthy rest to the sleeper.
Orthopaedic pillow is also known as a contoured pillow, therapeutic pillow, cervical pillow or neck pillow. It’s probably safe to say that all of us may use a therapeutic pillow.
The best way to prevent morning stiffness and pain is to have your neck supported as you sleep.
Choose a well-made mattress to keep your spine in a neutral position.
The below pictures illustrate the posture of spine while sleeping on your back, on a too high regular pillow and on the therapeutic enVy® pillow
While sleeping on your back on a standard pillow you often lose the natural curve of your neck (C-Spine).
FACT: As we fall asleep our neck muscles relax and no longer support the natural curve of our neck spine. This pillow does not support it for us. It causes the forward head leaning and straightening of C-spine (red line on picture).
RESULT: Chronic tight muscles, morning pains and stiffness in the neck and shoulders, reinforcement of poor posture… and long term health problems.
While sleeping on the therapeutic enVy® pillow the natural curve of C-spine is comfortably and properly supported.
FACT: Our sleeping posture should be similar to our “standing” posture. Here our client has a natural neck curve (red line) and her forehead, chin and chest are all parallel to the mattress, as shown with the dark line. This is especially important to those of us who spend much of our waking hours leaning forward over our computers and desks or any of the many jobs we have that require a leaning forward posture.
Correction at night is essential for our wellbeing.
RESULT: While sleeping on the therapeutic enVy® pillow… A healing restorative, healthy sleep… and a pain free morning.
How is enVy® pillow better than a regular pillow?
- SHAPE: Ergonomic Sloped Sides
Perfectly designed ergonomic sloped sides cradle your head in the centre of the pillow. When you sleep on your back, orthopaedists recommend that your ears, shoulders and hips should be aligned in a straight line, parallel to your mattress. (A small pillow under the back of your knees is highly recommended because it will decrease stress on your spine and support the natural curve in your low back.)
enVy pillow is designed to keep the neck aligned with the chest and lower back, and to reach proper alignment of the spine.
The foam thickness at the centre (V Spot) of the enVy® pillow is less than 4 cm to proper alignment of your head and neck.
When turning to your side, your head should remain in the centre (V-spot) of the pillow. You will feel the neck and head support in this side sleeping position as well and simultaneously it will minimize face-to-pillow contact.
This is ideal for TMJ sufferers as well as those recovering from facial rejuvenation, face lifts, laser, IPL or just the avoidance of sleep wrinkles.
- THE “V SPOT” or the “Sweet Spot” – central embossed pattern
Improves circulation by distributing weight and reducing pressure points. In addition, the “bumps” enable air circulation to improve breathability and overall comfort.
Finally the pattern allows to position head in the centre of the pillow.
- THE SUPPORT: Unique Patented “Stepping Stone Design”
Each enVy® pillow supports the natural curve of neck [C-spine].
enVy® pillow has been designed to sleep on your back and/or side.
Each enVy® Pillow comes equipped with a 2 neck support system.
You may choose to adjust to the smaller neck support initially before advancing to the larger therapeutic neck support simply by spinning the pillow to the opposite neck support area.
Most of smartphone and computer users bend their head for long hours every day. The human head weights about 4-5 kilograms. The load on cervical spine significantly increases with the bend of the head. Between a 45 degree angle and 60 degree angle it’s 20 or even 30kg.
When the spine is suffering from a “tech neck”, we need to regenerate the spine, exercise properly and sleep in the correct position.
Here’s how the enVy® pillow can help correct your spine during sleep:
For the health of your neck it is of great Importance how and what you sleep on.
Good sleeping posture and the right pillow help your neck, back and health.
